    The Darker Side of Psychology

If you think of psychology what you think of is the 101 course you took at college to meet some requirement, or maybe the latest article you read, or perhaps a short snippet you watched on Youtube. This is usually a collection of psychologists who have conducted an analysis using statistics of people performing whatever. It is likely that you have discovered that the majority of their subjects were in the fat clump in the bell curve. However, a handful of people might be in the world right today, doing just about anything you can think of. It’s likely to have always been this way. Primate species have a fascination with the world, and not else. This is a characteristic of our species, and could originate from our constant need to go beyond the limits of our knowledge. In addition, a smaller percentage of people are a part of the religion that was prevalent in the dark ages. Although ideologies are always present and many love them however, there are as many who are hesitant about giving up their freedom to a group mentality. In the longer term the an ardent Darwinism can prevail. dissuading any actions that don’t favor survival, and, most importantly reproduction.

It is important to note that more than 95% of the psychological studies that were conducted were done in nations that comprised just 12 percent of the population , that is. the most wealthy, mostly white, industrialized countries. (1) However, the field appears to represent everyone, as if every culture is, or ought to be, similar to ours. This is a noble assumption. While these endeavors may appear rather benign, there’s another aspect to psychology that isn’t. It is pervasiveand affects our lives to a degree that is that is not well-known. Contrary to other sciences, which are mostly scientific, the field of psychology ranks on par with economics in the way it influences and alters our lives.

If you’ve learned about famous figures like Sigmund Freud Carl Jung, and B.F. Skinner, I doubt you’re as well-versed in Edward Bernays, psychology’s favorite son. (2) Edward Bernays was the American cousin to Sigmund Freud. He was born in 1891, and his uncle was busy exploring the inner workings of our brain, Edward, during his profession, was able to bring his uncle’s research into an industry that was lucrative, namely “retail therapy.” Combining psychology with advertising, he devised and refined the methods that ensured the product could no longer be sold based on its benefits in isolation, but rather based on how it could make the consumer “feel,” either directly or indirectly generating feelings of self-worth and an incentive or operant conditioning in general. Since the time the psychology field has been busy aiding marketers in the creation of their expertly designed distortions. We recognize these as advertisements that continuously make us feel apathetic and in need of attention all day long. In addition, to applying psychology to advertising Bernays also developed the art of advertising. Bernays almost singlehandedly developed the fields of “Propaganda,” “Spin,” and the most popular, “Public Relations,” in which the public is taught “just what it is required to know, and not much more.”

Like no other Edward Bernays is owed the credit for having taken thirty years to put the warning label to be placed on cigarettes- even though it was known that smoking cigarettes caused cancer. This is how powerful public relations can be. Psychology is never far from distortion. “The terms used in psychology appear more designed to communicate the user’s dreams than to convey any specific meaning.” (3) As Pavlov’s dog I am now salivating whenever I hear the words Cognitive restructuring, emotion dysregulation the modification of behavior, cognitive dissonance conflict resolution, confirmational biasand finally “treatment,” that catch-all that is able to be sold for a pricecongruity, and my most favorite, psychobabble. which is a term that is not often used, however, plenty of examples are provided.

The beauty of science is that it’s real, whether you believe in its validity or otherwise. It is possible to discredit any testimonials since their existence is a sign of an absence of the science behind them. The other area where psychology for-profit works is for their state’s department of punishment and revenge, in which they are generally assigned to educating a particular kind of criminal and/or removing certain heresies. With the authority of the specialist in their name they are the ones who lead groups that eliminate the words that are considered to be forbidden while teaching appropriate phrases. Participants pay to these sessions for their weekly doses of shame. The course is “neat that is easy to master and not too difficult and yet just enough technical to make it feel like an experiment in science.” (4) The program’s goal is to strengthen the person’s devalued self-worth. It is based on the notion that you could find someone who enjoys chocolate, and through enough stimulation, get her to declare that not only do she not like chocolate anymore and believes that she doesn’t like it anymore. Psychologists are so sure of their beliefs that they are long ago unquestioned assumptions. If you try to question any of these convictions, you’ll first be met with ridicule Then you will be dismissed, ignored or even slammed in the manner that is expected by an ideological system. If you are a member of any of these groups expect to be frequently criticized for your morality that is based on religion. Watch how the psychologist quickly takes up the shield of psychological language, to shut down any debate or discussion. Like a self-styled evangelist, effortlessly shift from moralist who is guilt-assigning to spokesman for humanity.

It is believed that psychology teaches how to be observant and to try to be objectively critical about people. But not on the dark part… In that case, you are viewed as a piece of state-certified human waste. They use their skills to release poisonous venom, and then, just like the spider, take advantage of weaknesses of others. If confronted, their reaction will be similar to a spider saying, “It does what it does for the good of the environment.” Did you wonder who carried out all the “brainwashing” we were told about during the Cold War which was happening in the shadow of iron curtains? It was psychologists doing their best and that’s to do the bidding of the authority that is in place. It’s not a big possibility to say that, in many regions of the world and they’re back at it.
