Minecraft Legends is an upcoming action-strategy video game that is being created in collaboration with Mojang Studios and Blackbird Interactive and released through Xbox Game Studios. The game is scheduled to launch on April 18 2023. This isn’t the first spinoff in the ULTRA highly successful Minecraft series. You may be familiar with Minecraft Dungeons from the past that I had lots of fun with.
Could they repeat the success by releasing Minecraft Legends?
The first thing I’d like to do is encourage you to read Daniel’s reviews of the game We were both lucky enough to play the game quite early. Read his thoughts on this page: If you’re a enthusiast of Minecraft You’ve probably played this game, and think that it’s marketed to you…well I’m not sure here. Minecraft Legends takes away the creative aspect of Minecraft and gives you a real-time strategy game that isn’t executed very well.
I’m a fan of the effort however, when you choose a brand with a reputation for a specific thing and attempt to diversify it is important to be aware of the way in which the mechanics work and how the characters, lore and so on. All of it falls in line. It’s a good example. Mario X Rabbids Kingdom Battle was quite a departure from the usual Mario routine or Rabbid food to be sincere. However, it fully embodied all of the elements that these franchises are famous for and was presented in a different and highly successful manner. Minecraft Legends on the other was not.
As Daniel wrote in his review, the game isn’t sure what it is trying to be it’s a part of Pikmin and allowing your units to either gather resources (yep you can’t mine for resources like in Minecraft) or to have them fight for you on autopilot. The other game play is similar to a defence tower game. The game is horribly designed with open-world elements that require you to travel (sometimes for hours at a time) in order to hurry to save the village. The narrative in the game doesn’t keep it going, you’re provided with a cutscene and some humor added where they can, but this game totally does not meet the standards. I won’t repeat everything that was stated in our review, but I’m able to affirm that it has a lower rating.
Although it is far too simple to please RTS gamers, and not entertaining enough to appeal to the casual player Minecraft Legend is a really huge missed opportunity. As we wait for more games in the coming year by Microsoft Studios, I really would like to see a game to meet expectations very soon from Microsoft Studios.
