World's First Baby Born From Robot-Implanted Uterus

In Sweden, there has been a major achievement in the medical world, when the world’s first child was born from a robot-implanted uterus. The baby was born last month through a C-section (a method of operation) devised in Sweden.

According to the doctors, the weight of the baby is three kg now and both her 35-year-old mother and child are doing well. This feat has been done by the doctors of the University of Gothenburg. According to doctors, the pregnancy was made possible when a family member agreed to donate his uterus to the mother, then the fertilized egg was implanted through IVF. For the first time a robot was used for the process.

Doctors insert surgical instruments with cameras and robotic instruments through small access holes in the lower abdomen to complete the procedure. The robotics were operated via joysticks to view 3D images of the interiors.

Process Started in 2021

The transplant procedure was performed in October, 2021 at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden. Ten months later an embryo was created through IVF before being implanted into the transplanted uterus and the pregnancy was confirmed a few weeks later. Doctors reported that the mother was feeling well throughout her pregnancy, which has now ended in late May 2023 with a planned C-section at the 38th week.

Final Words

An estimated 90 uterus transplants have been performed worldwide, and approximately 50 children have been born as a result.
