The Royal Family's Weirdest Real

In the early 1800’s, Queen Anne from the Stuart royal family passed away. Her closest Protestant cousin was selected as her successor. The man was George I, the ruler of Hanover (a German province). George I was unable to speak English. The Hanover line was the aristocracy of England up to George III (the infamous King during the American Revolution) and later Queen Victoria in the 1800’s.

Queen Victoria was married to her cousin Prince Albert of the Saxe-Coburg line and Goltha, which is a German royalty line. He was famous for the introduction of the Christmas tree to England. Before his time, the christmas tree that was in England was not used widely though it was a common practice in Germany.

Following the demise of Queen Victoria Her daughter Edward VII became King. He took the title Saxe-Coburg and Goltha since it was the title of Prince Albert, his father. Prince Albert. In the course of World War I, there was a lot of anti-German sentiments in England. In the end, Edward changed the name of the English royal family from Saxe-Coburg Goltha in the name of Windsor (the spelling of the castle that was the longest occupied anywhere in the globe). The Windsor line of succession continues to this day with Charles III.

In 1947, Elizabeth (Queen Elizabeth II after 1952) Charles’s mother was married to prince Philip of Greek and Danish royal families. In the days before his wedding to Elizabeth; Philip gave up his Greek and Danish titles as an British citizens, then took the name of his father, Mountbatten. The name is a tribute to his maternal grandfather the prince Louis from Battenberg. Battenberg is, of course is a German province. Prince Louis was born in Austria but he became a British citizen. He joined the Royal Navy, and married the granddaughter of Queen Victoria. In the midst of World War I, he was the British Sea Lord (head of the Royal Navy). In the wake of German antipathy, He decided to quit his position as Sea Lord and to take off all German title, and take the title of Mountbatten.
