The lady from Amsterdam

The phone rang and Doc was watching football games on television. He was almost letting it call as it was his usual. He was delighted to hear the voice of Eline when she answered. He and Eline were acquainted six months ago when they were in the Netherlands to attend an Jazz Festival. After she taken Doc off in the airfield to catch his return flight home towards San Francisco, she had told him she was planning on visiting him at his house. He thought at the time that it was just a flimsy conversation and that nothing would occur, but she was calling him for a ride to the airport. It was a typical foggy and rainy San Francisco evening as Doc was making his way south on 101 towards the airport. The dogs at his home had caused some noise as he left the house since they were waiting for their walk in the evening. He thought to himself the dogs were going to have to wait until they could go for their next walk this morning.

When Doc was slowing down his car in front of the KLM terminal, he noticed Eline in an empty suitcase waiting. He thought about the times they’d previously shared and it were extremely happy memories. When he drove his car towards the curb, they looked each other in the eye and without saying anything, they both felt pleased to see each other again.. Doc did not believe in anyone, but he did trust her. He knew that he was able to. They actually had a relationship and were close friends. This is something that is becoming rarer over the time.

This trust, however, created problems for Doc. He was in no way awed by anyone, except for the fact that she was successful in getting on the other side of that huge wall he was facing. This was a problem since He did not wish for the wall to come down and he did not want to be concerned about any person. Or have them think about his needs. The woman was close to him and it was causing him to feel things were not something he wanted to feel. He knew he had to leave.

There were many reasons for why Doc was his way. As a child, he been through a horror-filled house. He was in a place where the creatures were people that were meant to be loving and caring about him. The reality was quite the opposite, and as a consequence, he was unable to let anyone touch him. He was homeless for a while and that taught him to not trust anyone and not even family members. When he was an infant Marine was a Marine, he witnessed as well and performed actions that led him to realize the vile and cruel human beings are. His perception of humankind was not at all a complement. If one can comprehend the way his experiences affected him, it is possible to be able to understand the reasons he behaved way the way he was.

Doc bought her a ticket for her return to Amsterdam and advised her that it wasn’t going to go as planned. Doc went away without offering an explanation. Later, Doc realized that he had committed a huge mistake. He was missing her, and the resentment the feelings he had towards her never left him. It was a sigh of relief to realize that he was able to walk away from the only person who truly was understanding and caring about him.

A decade after, Doc went to Amsterdam to find her. Doc found her in an area in France. She was delighted to meet him , but the damage was done which meant there would be no fix for it. Doc returned home to the realization that he’d never meet her again. The saying goes that time heals everything. Perhaps it is. Doc however, would be left with an indelible mark that he could never erase.
