The tennis legend Serena Williams announced Monday she is expecting her second child prior to her appearance at the 2023 Met Gala.
Williams made the announcement on an Instagram post that reads, “Was so excited when (Met Gala co-chair) Anna Wintour invited the 3 of us to the Met Gala.”
The accompanying pictures included the pregnant Williams with her husband along with Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian.
Williams and Ohanian have already become parents to their daughter, who is five years old Olympia. The tennis legend was the winner of 2017’s Australian Open while eight weeks pregnant. She only found that she was expecting just prior to the tournament began.
Williams 41-year-old Williams has spoken out about her desire to increase her family size — and not wanting to have another child when still playing. Williams has written an article in Vogue in where she wrote about her decision to withdraw from sports:
“In the last year, Alexis and I have been trying to have another child, and we recently got some information from my doctor that put my mind at ease and made me feel that whenever we’re ready, we can add to our family,” Williams wrote. “I definitely don’t want to be pregnant again as an athlete. I need to be two feet into tennis or two feet out.”
Williams The last time she played was on the final day of Williams’ final game was in the third round of U.S. Open on Sept. 2 2022. She lost to Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round, after defeating second seeded Anett Kontaveit. Williams finished her career with 23 Grand Slam titles, one shy of matching the career record held by Margaret Court. In the aftermath of her final game she declared she was now ready to be mother to her second child.
Williams has won her last Grand Slam singles title was at the 2017 Australian Open. In her Vogue article that she wanted to return to tennis but it appears that her time as an athlete is over her as she enters the next phase in her career.
