“Analysis of data obtained over the past two weeks by NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) investigation team shows the spacecraft’s kinetic impact with its target asteroid, Dimorphos, successfully altered the asteroid’s orbit,” NASA stated in an announcement to the press.
The mission is the first time that humans intentionally altered the motion of an object in the sky and also the first large-scale demonstration of the asteroid deflection technology according to the press release.
NASA stated the time it required Dimorphos an 11-hour and 55 minute period to travel around its bigger Asteroid Didymos before the launch mission. After the DART spacecraft’s collision with Dimorphos it takes the asteroid approximately 11 hours 23 mins to be in orbit around the larger asteroid NASA stated.
NASA is still collecting and analyzing information taken from the spacecraft, the release stated.
