Void Scrappers Reviews

Void Scrappers was my first love. This game is an excellent example of an indie developer who focuses on a single game loop and refines it until it’s perfect. It’s simple: you control a spacecraft from the top, in a classic Time Pilot fashion. You must blast every kind of space junk and debris, and then collect any scrap left behind.

You may be familiar with the style if you’ve played Vampire Survivors. However, this is not a fantasy setting. Instead, the action takes place in hostile galaxies where scrap metal can be currency and you must put yourself in danger to obtain it. This is a far cry than where I live. A simple act of leaving a sanitized cooker outside will draw a flatbed vehicle in five minutes. No interstellar combat necessary. Anyway, I digress.

Your avatar will automatically fire, so you have to direct it through the chaos of scrap, ordnance and hostile foes. You are weak and have only a tiny pea shooter cannon. With the required cooldown, you can turn on the afterburners to perform an evasive maneuver to get out of trouble. Three shield segments are all you need to get started. Scrap metal can be used to upgrade your guns, ammo, shields, and other variables.

Shield boosts can also be collected on the field. However, sometimes you may need to change your course in order to find them. This can put you at risk so it is up to you to decide whether to focus on survival or raiding for the pick-up. You will feel the compulsion to transform your ship into a scrap metal hoarding machine. It is a fun challenge that gradually increases in difficulty, but never gets boring. It’s refreshing to see how the run-throughs are procedurally generated.

In-game currency can be used to unlock new characters and weapons. You can also permanently improve your weapon and shield setup by meeting certain conditions. Although the developers insist on the importance of randomness, they also acknowledge that it allows for situations in which it is possible to surpass limitations. You start out “puny”, but you end up as the absolute Don, destroying everything on the screen. You can combine features to make the game borderline impossible, or push past the (intended?) endgame.

It is a classic art style with some great pixel art. Although there isn’t much plot, the characters have their own personalities and funny banter. Christoph Gray’s soundtrack is also fantastic, and a real treat for your ears as you navigate through the chaos.

This is a great game at a ridiculously low price. It’s also very fun. I was captivated by it quickly and couldn’t put it down. Void Scrappers is a great choice for those who enjoy quirky shooters. It also works well with other genres. This one will be on my Switch for a while, as it feels right at home there.
