Exercise in Middle-Age Not Linked to Pelvic Floor Disorders

The connection of physical activities (PA) in conjunction with pelvic floor issues (PFDs) is being studied and there was no correlation between moderate-level PA and the symptoms of PFDs, as reported in an online study that was published on Jan. 19, in BJOG The Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology: An International Journal of Obstetrics as well as Gynaecology.

Mari A. Kuutti, from Mari A. Kuutti, from the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland together with colleagues, carried out a cross-sectional observational research using a retrospective assessment of the PA of the population of 1,098 47-to 55 year-old Finnish women. The relationship between early PA (at the age of 17 to 29 years) and the current PA at middle age were analyzed together with the symptoms of PFD such as anxiety urine incontinence and urine incontinence that is arousing constipation or defecation issues, and the sensation of prolapsed pelvic organ.

The study found no evidence of an independent relationship between PA symptoms and the symptoms associated with PFDs. The probability of having urine incontinence that is arouses the urge -but not the symptoms that indicate stress-related urinary incontinence constipation, fecal incontinence or defecation problems and pelvic organ prolapsewas higher for middle-aged women who have an early-adulthood history of participation in competitive sporting activities (odds ratio of 2.16). The chance of suffering from fecal incontinence with no other indications of PFDs, was higher for women who have an ongoing history of P.A. (odds ratio of 4.41).

“Pelvic floor disorders can be prevented and rehabilitated; therefore, there is no need to be shy when seeking professional help,” the co-author stated in an article. “Exercising according to a personalized exercise program made by a physiotherapist is safe and effective.”
