US Bans Huawei Equipment, Cites 'National Security Risk'

The Federal Communications Commission prohibits the importation and sale of communication equipment manufactured by Chinese companies, including Huawei.

Federal Communications Commission (FCC), has banned the importation and sale of communication equipment manufactured by ZTE and Huawei, because they pose an unacceptable risk to US national security.

This week, the FCC’s five members voted unanimously to block the import or sale of communication equipment that is deemed to be a national security threat.

Apart from ZTE and Huawei, the list also includes Hikvision and Dahua Technology, as well as all their affiliates and subsidiaries.

FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel stated in a statement (Opens in new window): “The FCC is committed protecting our national security by ensuring untrustworthy communication equipment is not authorized to be used within our borders. We are continuing that work here.”

She said that the new rules were an important part our ongoing efforts to protect Americans from national security threats related to telecommunications.

Brendan Carr is a member on the FCC board Tweets(Opens in new window): “Our unanimous vote represents the first time that the FCC has voted to ban the authorization of equipment based upon national security concerns.

He said that no new Huawei or ZTE equipment could be approved as a result. If they promise the FCC that their gear will not be used for security or public safety of government facilities or other national security purposes, no new Dahua, Hikvision or Hytera gear will be approved.
